Going with the flow: part 2
If before building a company was like pushing a massive boulder up a mountain, this approach is a little more like going for a challenging hike. It still requires effort, but I’m traveling lighter now and it seems like a more enjoyable journey to the top, wherever that may be.
At the beginning of the year, I wrote about going with the flow, rather than fighting it. I thought I’d share a little update 3 months in, because honestly, it feels absolutely thrilling.
For the first time, probably ever in my life, I’m truly not fighting the flow. I’ve let customers who suck leave while wholeheartedly embracing people who turn up organically.
Going with the flow has created another surplus—time.
Because I’m no longer spending time analyzing potential business opportunities and constantly thinking of ways to “expand”, I have the mental space to focus on what really matters: making my current customers (and myself) happy.
Of course, I still do occasionally get caught in analysis paralysis, but I’m learning to sit with the ambiguity, letting it build until there is some immovable force—a series of shouts and screams from deep down—telling me I need to do something.
Most importantly, going with the flow has renewed my belief in myself. I started my business because I genuinely care about the problem I’m solving. My beliefs and values matter, my taste is good and, that inner voice inside my head? I think I’m going to keep listening to it because it’s usually right.
I’d love to know if this style of building resonates with you. If so, please feel free to email me or leave a comment below!
