You can't hide forever
I remember when I worked in VC there were a few people I worked with that seemed to operate on another level. They seemed to wake up every day excited to hunt deals, make money, rinse and repeat. These people were and still are the best at the business, they did it for decades and could do it forever. Why? Because they love it. It's that simple.
Try as I could, I couldn’t hide from the fact that I wasn’t like them. For example, I’m not passionate about B2B software or crypto and never have been. I could pretend, but only to an extent.
Starting my own company was a fresh start. A chance to work on a problem I personally cared about, not because it was expected to be lucrative or seemed “interesting”.
Now, I am building in an industry where I care about my customers and business partners, and derive just as much joy from my product as my own customers. Especially when business has been tough, these intangible things have been invaluable to keep me going.
If you’re looking to start a company, don’t go looking for another hole to hide in. Sure, you can work on something with the sole goal of making money. In fact, you can probably get away with some clever hacks to do it. More likely, however, you’ll hit a wall and be run aside by people who actually care.
I had to go back and reread my very first post of this newsletter to remind myself why we are here: to build a community of people building on their own terms, people seeking solutions, not capital. In hindsight, I should have also added seeking solutions to problems you genuinely care about. Because the truth is, you can’t hide forever.
If you are building on your own terms, and are eager to meet and be apart of a community like this, please fill out this mastermind interest form. A big thanks to the 16 people who have already filled out this form!
